INITIAL CONSULTATION

Your initial one-to-one consultation is aimed at helping you articulate what brought you to therapy. This may be one, or more likely, a number of issues. We will help you find a way to express what you need.

Through this process, you and the therapist will get to know each other better. We find it works best when the initial consultation is conducted over either an extended session (Marie Laure) or over three fifty minute sessions (Joe). This allows time for you to test and challenge the therapist and for the therapist to see your responses to their clarifications and interpretations. 

It can’t be emphasized strongly enough that psychotherapy works best when there is a good “fit” between therapist and client, when the client can come to trust the therapist, based on their experience.Our way of conducting initial interviews allows you to make a decision based on real and substantial experience of us, and the way we work.

It also gives you a substantial “take away,” whether you decide to continue with therapy or not. After the initial session(s), you should be much clearer about the issues that are confronting you, and have at least the beginning of an understanding of their origins.

The decision to undertake therapy is a mutual one, made at the end of the initial consultation(s). Obviously, when you first book to see one of us for an initial session, you are free to decide whether you want to continue the process after the first meeting.
